This course takes a long-range view of writing. Individual pieces churn up discoveries in the writer’s work at the same time as they test content and style. “Memoir” usually refers to a book-length work, filled with the intensity of a life lived, sometimes against huge odds. Here, we primarily do pieces of memoirs Using numerous free-writing assignments, students write mostly autobiographical pieces. To help students understand style, structure, and other literary elements of such pieces, students read several texts that explore the art of writing about meaningful life experiences to provoke intrigue, reflection, and discovery.
